Alex Mesta, a teenager from California, was fired from his job at Jack-in-the-Box after he was caught on camera giving free tacos to a military veteran. The Facebook post, which has since gone viral, details the event which led to the termination of young Alex.
Everyday Mesta saw the same veteran come in for coffee. “Him and I would just share stories, and I’d ask how he was doing,” fired employee Alex Mesta said. “Since he’s a vet, I don’t think I should charge him for a coffee. It’s like, not even a dollar for his coffee.”
One day, a customer ordered some tacos but decided they did not want them. So, according to Mesta “It was either throw them away or make them for him.” The total cost of the meal gifted to the vet was estimated to be a retail value under $4 but Jack-in-the-Box terminated Mesta for violating their policies.
Jack-in-the-Box’s Corporate Communication issued a statement regarding the incident: “We too are grateful to our veterans and to the men and women currently serving in the armed forces. Regarding this incident, while it would not be appropriate to provide complete details on an internal disciplinary issue, our actions in this case were not based on just one incident and had nothing to do with the guest’s military experience.”
The restaurant also went further to say that it was not this single action which led to the termination of Alex, however, Alex protests that he had never received any written warnings on his behavior or performance from the fast food chain.
“I know what I did wasn’t right to them,” Mesta said. “But to me, it felt right.”
Since the Facebook post was published, it has been shared over 8,500 times. Alex Mesta is currently seeking employment from his 2-year stay at Jack-in-the-Box.
