Teammate Eric Reid mentioned the protest was about institutional racism. Colin Kaepernick did say that he would not stand “to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”
One of the earliest protest was done in the 1968 Olympics as Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in the air during the playing of the anthem.
Now, there are a lot of NFL athletes following suit. Here are LA players, Kenny Britt and Robert Quinn, raising their fists in the air.
Antoine Bethea and Eli Harold of the San Francisco 49ers also raised their fists in the air.
Jelani Jenkins, Arian Foster, Michael Thomas and Kenny Stills of the Miami Dolphins also decided to kneel rather than stand up.
Here is another as Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters raises his fist in the air
Patriots Martellus Bennett and Devin McCourty also had their fists up
