Death of One American Soldier Too Many
The attack occurred around 1 p.m. on Wednesday in Jalalabad, according to Maj. Gen. Mike Murray, deputy commander, U.S. Forces Afghanistan-Support.
This shooting of an American soldier by an Afghan National Army soldier marks the first U.S. service member killed as part of the Resolute Support mission. The mission began January 1 with Afghan National Security Forces taking over security of the country. At that time the United States and NATO transitioned to an advise-and-assist mission.
A statement was released which read, “We remain committed to assisting our Afghan partners in achieving sustainable security and stability. This attack will not weaken our resolve.”
The statement also reported that the incident continues to be investigated and reviewed by Resolute Support and Afghan authorities. When it is appropriate, according to the statement, more information will be released.
Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of this American soldier.
